The Tradition of Stockings Plus Practical and Unexpected Stuffers

The Tradition of Stockings Plus Practical and Unexpected Stuffers

Memories of a Little Girl

When I was a little girl I remember waking up in the wee morning hours and finding my stocking in bed with me. It felt so heavy and it was so magical. I would stretch and smile from ear to ear and quietly peek inside. It was always filled with tiny little things that I absolutely loved. There was always so many items jammed into my stocking that it was always over flowing with surprises.

Building the Tradition Before Kids

Let’s fast forward to when hubby and I spent our first Christmas in our own home, this was 15 years ago. We agreed that this was a tradition we would keep up for each other because we both enjoyed opening our stocking as children. Although we did have some differences that came up that Christmas Eve.

We both secretly filled each others stocking and we met in the living room. He wrapped my stocking and I left his unwrapped. He wanted to place mine in the hallway outside our bedroom door and I wanted to lay his on the floor beside our bed.

We quickly realized that the Santa in our childhood homes was different in many ways. After much discussion we decided that yes a wrapped stocking does add excitement to the morning and once we have kids leaving them outside of the door will take away the opportunities of Santa being seen.

Our Tradition of Stockings Today

Let’s fast forward to today. 15 years later and we have four children who enjoy unwrapping their stockings on Christmas morning that Santa has placed outside of their bedroom doors. I do have to add I quickly changed Santa’s wrapping choice to tissue paper because it just makes the job that much quicker.

  • Stockings are my favorite thing to do on christmas , I love filling them up and watching my lil one and bigger guys get into their stocking , I always sneak in some silly socks , toothbrushes and batteries , they never seem to mind

  • My parents always put our stockings beside us in our beds when we were growing up and I loved that tradition so I do it for my kids now. My daughters share a room so they all open them up together (we don’t wrap the stuff in their stockings) on one of their beds and then put it all back in the stocking and then we all open up our stockings again while we have breakfast and show each other what was in the stockings. Every year the stockings have different stuff but some of the things that stay the same are nuts (going to do pistachios this year!), an orange, a book (either colouring or reading), some art/craft supplies, and a piece of jewelry

  • We wrap our stocking stuffers! Usually our stocking have items like socks, underwear, toothbrushes, bodywash, lip balm, candy, shampoo, deodorant, razors, bubble bath, small toys, kitchen gadgets….all items that you can use! And I must say our stockings always end up over-flowing!

  • When I was a kid, I looked forward to my stocking more than my wrapped gifts. I loved to receive candy, chocolates, magazines, and little toys.
