When Sugar Becomes The Enemy: Sugar-Free Creamy Frozen Banana Whip Recipe #ONatural
The secret I have been keeping
I was hoping to wait till the New Year to share a tidbit of what’s been going on within the walls of our kitchen. For the most part you will have to wait to read the whole story, but when Orange Naturals asked me to write about sugar I knew I couldn’t completely hold back.
Today I went to see my Nutritionist on a quick follow-up since our 21 day detox (more on that in January). After narrowing down my food consumption we have narrowed down briefly that ‘sugar’ is my trigger food. This actually was something I deep down inside knew but was in hard denial about accepting.
My name is Tammy, I am a chocoholic & ice cream-oholic!
You see, I am what you call a ‘chocoholic’. I only enjoyed the rich flavours of dark chocolate 70% & up, which I have filed in my mind was “good for me.” The truth was this chocolate addiction was truly an addiction. Chocolate or ice cream were my go-to when my emotions were in a roller coaster, my go-to when I needed to wind down, both chocolate and ice cream were always on my mind. I know I am not alone in saying that because I have a few friends who share the same cravings.
Hello Auto Immune Disease
The problem is I ate so much chocolate and ice cream my body turned it into a trigger food. It was probably four months or so ago when the itching started, the uncontrollable desire to itch turned my body into red welts of scratches. Some days I would itch more than others and some days none, but the itching was from head to toe and nothing controlled it. The red welts disappeared by the next day or sooner. Leaving no traces of them left. I tried creams, allergy medicine, the doctor; nothing gave me relief or explanation. After a night of Googling with red welts all over me I found a few forums that said it was an Auto Immune Disease. Since we recently discovered my husband has a form of an auto immune disease too, I felt this was enough. I couldn’t continue this itching it was cramping my style, I had to deal with the enemy in my diet.
When sugar turns into your enemy
I heard of this wonderful Nutritionist in town and to make a long story short, she has helped me realize that sugar is my enemy. Since my detox each time I ate something with sugar in it, the tingling would start, than itching and the red welts followed. During my whole 21 day detox I never itched once. We are continuing to narrow down the exact sugars but for the meantime I am happy to know my consequence for eating sugar is uncontrollable itching that is nothing but a huge cramp in my day.
Read labels
Since this endeavor I have been reading labels and I am absolutely disguised in the amount of sugar in everything we consume daily. It reminded me of a TED Talks with Jamie Oliver, if you have time this is a great video to watch. If not, I took a print screen to give you an idea of how much sugar (Jamie Oliver researched) in the US an average child will consumes in five years from milk given at school. Who thought adding sugar to milks was a good idea?
Level your blood sugar
Although there are many sugar substitutes out there, there are only a few that are natural and don’t feed your gut bacteria. Xylitol and Stevia were recommended to me. However, if you do eat sugars in other forms and find you are experiencing up and down sugar spikes in your day Orange Naturals has many supplements that can help to balance blood sugar. I have in the past used cinnamon for these spikes and enjoy adding a few drops of Orange Naturals Cinnamon Tincture in my daily ND Shakes. Which by the way my Nutritionist gives two thumbs up too.
Creamy Frozen Banana Whip: Sugar Free Recipe
When my nutritionist suggested I try to replace my ice cream with frozen bananas in all honestly I thought that was plain silly. Till finally I did it. It is simple peel bananas toss them into a ziploc bag and when your ready for some ‘ice cream’ toss them into your blender with a splash of hot water and blend. You can flavor the base anyway you like. I love tossing in some walnuts and Orange Naturals Cinnamon Tincture. It is extremely creamy and does get pretty close to the real thing. My hubby actually likes it much better than ice cream.

So glad you narrowed down your trigger to sugar. I’m not sure I could go 100% sugar free. Love your idea for ice cream. I’ll have to try it.
