Welcome to Rome Tour: Twilight City Stroll & Gelato-Tasting With Walks of Italy
This was our first international trip; we were nervous, and we wanted to arrive in Rome with a welcome that would take the pressure off the unknown. So we booked a Walks of Italy – Welcome to Rome Tour: Twilight City Stroll & Gelato-Tasting the same day we arrived.
We had many questions if answered would be very helpful for us during the remainder of our dream vacation. Questions such as; Do Italians tip? What type of restaurants to indulge or skip? What is Rome’s must try street food? Where to shop when in Rome?
Yes, we were a bit of jet legged after our 8-hour flight to Italy from Canada, but that didn’t stop us. We were embarking on a trip of a lifetime, and we couldn’t wait to get the download from our Walks of Italy tour guide about all things Italian.
Welcome to Rome Tour
Our 2.5-hour tour with Walks of Italy started at Piazza Navona at 5 pm the end of their daily siesta. The Piazza was lined with Italians painting, chatting, singing and laughing with family and friends. The social time in Italy is just after siesta the streets line with locals before dinner.
Our group consists of 6 of us, plus the tour guide. She was extremely fluent in English and grew up in Rome. Each of us received a headset which allowed us to wander, touch and still hear our Walks of Italy tour guide’s expert knowledge.
All About The Stories
The fountains in Piazza Navona consist of Bernini’s ‘Fountain of Four Rivers.’ Jaw dropping beautiful, it was very hard to capture it through the lens. Your tour guide will give you the inside knowledge behind the story of the ‘Fountain of Four Rivers’ and point of sights your eyes would miss without her awareness of the history standing before you.
Strolling History
Next up was a trip to the Pantheon. I quickly fell in love with this 1,900-year-old building. Even as I sit here and type, my eyes are welling up with tears over the beauty of the Pantheon.
Touching the Pantheon and seeing with my own eyes how advanced the Romans engineering skills were so many centuries ago. Was mind blowing! The Pantheon grand and rough on the outside wears marble inside with no details of beauty held back. Today, the Pantheon spirit is still holy and they still hold church services within.
A Roma Tradition!
Half way through our Welcome to Rome Tour, it was time to taste the Gelato our taste buds were craving. Experiencing a Roman tradition is the perfect way to social with your new friends from across the world.
Ordering Gelato in an experience on its own, and I was thankful our Walks of Italy tour guide taught us the ins and outs of indulging in this creamy treat. The best part is for all you dairy-free friends of mine; there is vegan gelato in most gelateria shops. Just ask for “Senza latte” when ordering your gelato.
Next up, The Trevi Fountain and we walked the Spanish Steps with the light of the moon on our backs.
Our welcome to Rome tour with Walks of Italy was:
- The perfect way to get our “feet wet” when first arriving in Rome.
- Exactly the welcome we needed to overcome international unknowns.
- Maria gave us an inside look into the Roman culture and answered all our questions with ease.
- Maria pointed out pieces of the puzzle that we applied to our remaining travels.
- Gave us the confidence to experience Rome and Italy with an open set of eyes.
- Maria was clear, friendly and left an imprint on our first night in Rome.

Disclosure: I was provided with complimentary tours. However, as always my opinions in this blog are my own.
I’m not sure what I’d ask, but I would be paying close attention to so many wonderful things! I’ve heard about the Gelato in Italy, I would love to try it and see these sights!
I admit that I’m most interested in food when I travel so I would ask the tour guide for the restaurants that are the most popular with the locals.
Wow it looks like an amazing tour and I am sure the Gelato was really good!
Rome is incredible on feet and exploring all the nooks around the city. We went there this past March and it was incredible.

I had my first ever gelato in Rome (lemon), and my first espresso (at a stand-up espresso bar). I’ve never had another gelato that matched that first one.
