Tips To Prevent Cold and Flu Season From Taking Over Your Home

No matter how much we dream of the warm sun on our backs and the kids running through the long grass, summer is a distant memory and the cold and flu season has arrived. Is your family prepared for cold and flu season?

With more than 100 viruses that can cause a cold, I am doing everything in my power to avoid getting stuck with a week or two of misery.

Who really wants to be put under the spell of a cold and flu?

I am not interested in chasing a runny nose all day, my own nose or my children’s. Plus, the itchy sore throat, hacking cough, congestion, and mild fever, literally suck all of my time. I don’t have time to be tending to this sort of nonsense, do you?

Here are a few tips to prevent cold and flu season from taking over your home.

Shower daily. The last few years we have been getting the kids to shower daily, especially on school nights. Yes, this causes a lot more work for us, but last year it proved to us that it in fact worked.

With 4 kids in the house you would have thought we would have had a least a few common colds or the flu take over. It wasn’t till March last winter when we had our first cold of the season. I’d say a shower a day worked. Think of the school germs the kids are climbing into bed with, in their hair and all over. YUCK!

Eat a well-balanced diet. It is no secret that eating a well-balanced diet will keep you healthier. I seen this first hand when we completed our diet overhaul as a family last year. By eating more greens and eliminating processed foods from your diet you are giving your body the nutrients it needs to be strong and fight for your health.

Sleep. We love our sleep in our house. Our kids were always great sleepers, even since birth. Sleep to me in a no brainer when it comes to your health. Sleep not only helps boost your immune system, it also helps keep your brain healthy.

Did you know? Well you are sleeping, your brain eliminates toxins and recharges.

Generations, upon generations have been using sleep as a source to build your immune system. I don’t need to prove this with studies, just ask your Grandparents.

Improving Indoor Air Quality. During those long, cold months in our Canadian winters we seal up our homes tight to keep heated air from escaping. At the same time, we are trapping stale smells and air pollutants from fireplaces, water heaters, dryers, air-fresheners, carpets, cooking, cleaning products, candles and so much more.

Since our Canadian winters are long, this is trapping airborne particles in our homes between 5 – 7 months of the year. During that time frame we are breathing in this infested air quality. YUCK!

Did you know? A recent KAZ survey, revealed that 7 in 10 Canadians do not own an air purifier, and yet 67% say they are concerned or very concerned about air quality and its effect on their health.

The quickest way to gain your indoor air quality back and getting your health under control is with a good air purifier to remove allergens, harmful particles and odours from your home.

The Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover Air Purifier is the #1 doctor recommended air filter brand that works to capture up to 99.97% of the airborne particles, 0.3 microns and larger, that pass through the filters.

We’ve been Beating Indoor Air Pollution since last winter. I have to say it’s made a huge difference in the smell and quality of the air my family and I are breathing in.

Did you know? Canadians on average spend 20 hours indoors per day throughout the year. 7 in 10 Canadians do not own an air purifier, and yet 67% say they are concerned or very concerned about the air quality and its affect on their health.

When I sense a staleness in the air, I switch on our Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover Air Purifier. What I like most about it is, the fact that I can put it on a timer for 2, 4 or 6 hours. This allows me to walk away and forget about it. You can also switch on to remove air borne allergens like smoke, dust, pollen, mold and pet dander.
