Random Act Of Kindness to a #TideColdHero In Honour of My Gramma
Once upon a time there was an incredible women who took so much pride in her daily routine. A routine that took place in any element Mother Nature gave her. Rain, fog, heat, the bitter cold winter when we all were hibernating in the warmth of our homes, offices or cars. She with pride stood at her cross-walk for 20 years in Toronto, she was a crossing guard, she is my Gramma.
She watched “her cross-walk kids” grow as she crossed them through the years. I remember being a little girl and visiting Gramma at work, she was always proud to have me by her side. She was so proud of her duty to keep “her cross-walk kids” safe and her duty to Toronto, as a public servant.
The picture of the right is my Gramma walking to work which was actually a far hike daily. You can see in her left hand she has her stop sign, something that hasn’t changed and crossing guards today still carry the same ones.
This is one of her favorite pictures and one she was proud to share with everyone. When she reached 15 years of service the City of Toronto had a ceremony and gifted her a 15 year pin for her public service.
You can tell by the smile on her face, she was proud and she deserved to be. Sometimes in life you wish to have just one more conversation to those in Heaven. Today I wish I could tell my Gramma just how proud I am of her.
In Honour of My Gramma
Tide wants to recognize and celebrate Canadians (like my Gramma) that suffer the cold to get the job done – our humble, local Cold Weather Heroes! From the crossing guard who helps your little one get to school safely to the linesman braving heights to ensure you have power and heat on these frosty days, Canadian Cold Weather Heroes can be found in every community, and they don’t let the cold stop them!
I used this opportunity to do it in honour of my Gramma who was a #TideColdHero for 20 years. Since our children are bused to school and since we have a rural school we don’t have a crossing guard. However, there is one in town I see every so often and it hit me one day when I was driving by her. She was going to be my #TideColdHero. It actually hit me with tears and hit me hard, almost like a nudge from my Gramma in Heaven happened in that moment.
We had never met, we have never spoke and she was my #TideColdHero.
She is a sweet lady and she seemed to be in shock about this random act of kindness I was gifting her. After my short story about my Gramma and my quick introduction about Tide asking me to give her this gift, she was all smiles and kept saying “I do my best!” That she does!
I took my children to school late this morning so they could get a feel for how amazing something so small like a thank you can impact someone’s day. Plus I need a photographer and Miss C did a wonderful job.
Inside my gift basket I wrote a personalized card and gave her a gift card to Tim Hortons because that was my Gramma favorite indulge.
Tide wants you to share a random act of kindness with your #TideColdHero!

LOVE this contest! I’ve entered for my son’s school bus driver, Cherie. She’s always so cold opening and closing that door picking up and dropping off all of the little kids. I’d love to win her a prize. 🙂
Cheryl thanks for entering! I have to agree it is wonderful to win for someone else 🙂
My cold weather hero is my neighbor who goes out in the cold and helps his other neighbors out, with either carrying groceries in, or shoveling the driveway/sidewalks.

Thanks Ivy for your tweet! What a wonderful #TideColdHero you have entered for!
My Cold Weather Hero is my cousin who is very close to me. Two years ago my father and his brother and my two cousins were out Ice fishing. About 3 hours away from home. The ice cracked and my father who was 68 at the time fell in. Within seconds my cousin “Craig” fell flat to his stomach and risked his own life crawling over the ice reaching out and grabbing my fathers jacket. He managed to pull him up and get him to safety. From that day on he is known right though our family as a Hero. The cold weather made the situation even worse. We are all thankful for Craig!
Thanks!
Hi Amy! WOW thank goodness for Craig! Please tweet me your #TideColdHero entry to enter!
I can still clearly picture the crossing guard from my school, very much back in the day, Jean. 🙂 You could tell, by the way she proudly kept our school’s street corner safe, that she loved her job protecting us kids. I imagine your Gramma was the same kind of incredible person who was there for us everyday! Really love the way you paid tribute to her by forwarding the love to someone just like her. <3

A woman that I met who works at our local foodbank is my #TideColdHero. I can’t take a picture of her right now because we are in different countries but we chat regularly on Social Media and she always brightens my day. She gives and gives and gives to all those in need, including animals. She has my complete admiration and she really has earned this award.
