Last Christmas, I found myself asking Tammy, my go-to expert on all things kid appropriate, about her favourite tablet for the kiddos. We were brainstorming gift ideas for my eldest son, Benji, who was 3 years old at the time. That fall, he was thoroughly enjoying preschool but I was getting myself mentally prepared for kindergarten readiness for the following September! Tammy’s answer was the Vtech InnoTab.

We didn’t go with a tablet that year but wouldn’t you know it, I received a surprise gift: a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10. Of course it quickly became an exciting toy for the whole family and since it is an Android based tablet I was able to set it up to handle a kid mode, using my favourite apps for kids made available in Google Play.

When Tammy asked me to review the InnoTab Max this October I was excited to do so because it was Android based and advertised compatibility with Android apps. Perfect! I already knew how much my son was learning through educational based apps on the Galaxy Tab and thought he would love the chance to have his very own device to continue his interactive learning on!

InnoTab Max Reviews

We received the InnoTab Max and right away we noticed it’s rugged durability, convenient handle, cover that flips into a skid proof stand to position the tablet on a surface, handy (and fun to use) stylus and best of all: large 7’’ screen to display killer, impressive graphics!

We noticed the cover had buttons to easily snap on and off, so I took it off in order to slip the stylus string around the hinge. The idea being to proactively ATTACH the stylus to the device so the two shall never depart!

Parents, it does take some work to set up your InnoTab Max. Including downloading firmware updates even after all of the initial registration and setup. A little bit of friendly user feedback for Vtech: I would love to see the software update notifications only while in parent mode or as an email to me. My son didn’t know what to do with the pop ups and it interrupted his play and learning time to have to download firmware updates.

As part of the initial set up, one of the first things we had fun doing was taking our mug shots using the heavy duty kid friendly, 180 degree rotating camera! Vtech has solved the problem of needing two cameras for front facing and selfie pictures by using one rotating camera.

Texting Messages Between Parent to Child

We each took a selfie shot so that we could set up our Kid Connect app with our images, for texting and messaging one another! I downloaded the Kid Connect app by Vtech from the Google Play store on my phone so that I could also send and receive messages to Benji on the InnoTab Max.

The Kid Connect app is a lot of fun for Benji right now as he is learning to read and write his letters and he loves sending messages to both Mommy and Daddy on paper or over the computer. Now he has his own device to use to send us messages and they are very interactive messages! He can send voice messages, emoticon stickers, draw and send us a picture or even take a picture to send. We can both choose from short, preset messages such as: I love you! Thanks! High five! And many more.

Kid Safe Built In Browser

We are very excited to discover much more that the InnoTAB Max has to offer, especially browsing the internet using the kid safe built in browser which comes with parent approved websites already loaded. These will be Benji’s first interactions with the internet and I am excited to see him exploring it from his own device.

Also there is the option to purchase additional game cartridges, in all your kids’ favourite characters including Disney and Nickelodeon. I look forward to seeing more downloads as they become available for the InnoTAB Max!
