Family Camping: Captured Memories with Nikon D3300 #NikonMOMents
Over the course of the next 12 months follow hash-tag #NikonMOMents for social shares from the Nikon MOMents team. Each of us will be posting five personal events where we will capture our memories at the heart of the image!
This is my first personal NikonMOMents event from my five part series.
Travel has always been a dream of ours to explore with as a couple and with our children. It’s a goal that we together travel bits of the world one day and purchase property overseas. Being a family of six this does pose some great challenges in the younger years and can be very costly. At this time in our lives we are indulging our inner travel bugs within driving distance, pulling our own home on wheels to our great destinations.
One plus of travelling is sightseeing along the way. Ontario really has a lot to offer the adventurist and we can keep the cost down for our big family travels, by enjoying sightseeing with our camper in tow. Not only does pulling our home on wheels help us explore new places within comfort. It also allows us time with each-other giving each child our undivided attention, for a big family that sometimes is a struggle.
Exploring our surroundings and getting comfortable with nature.
Exploring the bike trails in a new city is a day trip well camping.
This was our first camping trip where I brought along my new Nikon D3300. Usually I use my smartphone or point and shoot camera with it stuck on auto mode. I had a blast capturing moments with my new Nikon D3300 I never once turned it to auto and really fell in love with the Aperture setting.
It was pure joy as I watched the kids splash in the water at the beach through the eyes of my DLSR lens. Please note: I included the setting used within the following three pictures.
After a long day at the beach exploring the waters, building sand castles and making memories, the kids still had buckets full of energy. Another plus of bringing a camping trailer along, is piling on the bikes for the kids to enjoy at the campground.
I love this picture of the top of our camper trailer looking at our six bikes on the bike rack. We get a lot of looks on the highway from smiling grandmas and moms as we drive by. Capturing this moment with my Nikon will be something to smile at once the kids are all grown up.
Well Daddy cooked dinner I took the opportunity to watch the kids ride their bikes up and down the camping grounds road. Our kids could have ridden all day if given the chance.
When I captured this picture I was continuously shooting the kids as they rode up and down. It wasn’t till I was reviewing them did I notice his fish lips. He was naturally off in his own world enjoying his ride.
This picture really made me proud of my new photography skills. Using my old point and shoot camera I would never have been able to blur my two subjects in the background. Not only is this possible with using a Nikon DLSR I also gained a new confidence in my ability to get creative and move the subject to the left.
After all the fun we all worked up an appetite and camp food should never be boring or lack nutrition. We smoked salmon over the fire with dill, wrapped scallops in bacon as an appetizer. Steamed corn in dill and butter, along side of roasted mini potatoes with garlic and herbs. A little effort and with the help of our whole team we enjoyed a gourmet meal from our lawn chairs.
A camping trip would never be complete without campfire stories, roasting marshmallows and eating smores.
It did take me a while to find the prefect settings at the camp fire, but to my surprise I used the ‘no flash’ and night-time effects setting and it captured these night-time memories with ease.
Well camping you can still enjoy the simple pleasures.
Sometimes marshmallows turn out golden brown – and sometimes they don’t.
But no matter how you like your marshmallow – stuffed between cookies and chocolate is always a hit.
The best part about camping as a family. You get to wake up and do it all over again the next day.
I am extremely impressed with how my pictures have been turning out since I have gotten comfortable holding and shooting with my Nikon D3300. I cannot see myself ever picking up my old point and shoot; to be honest I cringe at taking pictures with my smartphone now. Although it is convenient they never turn out as rewarding as using my Nikon D3300.

“Ontario really has a lot to offer the adventurist and we can keep the cost down for our big family travels, by enjoying sightseeing with our camper in tow.” You are so right about Ontario. The beauty of the Province provides a fabulous backdrop for photo taking. I’m a little biased to the Bruce Peninsula and the opportunities it provides. Thanks for sharing the photos.
I look forward to sight seeing more in Bruce Peninsula it has so much to offer in beauty! Thanks for swinging by!
that marshmallow picture is amazing! Such clarity. LOVE!
Thanks Caroline! A burnt marshmallow always happens 🙂
Really beautiful photos! I’m not so much of a camper, but my kids loved it and so did their dad. I love the photo of the burning marshmallow; it brings back some wonderful memories!

Thanks Heather! Those are my favorites too. A great camera really makes it hard to narrow down. Have you been camping recently?
No we haven’t but we have plans for a backyard camp-out this summer! 🙂
Wonderful photos 🙂 I have such fond memories of going camping with my family when I was a child – your photos really bring those memories back!
I am so glad my pictures brought you back to some happy childhood memories! Do you still camp?
Love the pictures you took. Looks like you had an amazing time. Brings back memories to the camping trips my family took us on as young kids. Those are still some of my fondest moments. How amazing you can capture those memories so beautifully and have your kids look through them when they’re older.
I hope our children will look back and smile at all these memories one day. That really warms my heart to think about. Thanks for for swinging by!
