Banana Crunch Bread Recipe + Baking with Kids: Tips From RobinHood.ca
One of the top parenting tips I have learned since being a parent is the importance enjoying one-on–one time with each child. When a child is craving attention they show negative which can easily (in some cases) be turned around with some one-on-one attention. I do struggle with this, having four children in the house ages 7 and under. Finding alone time with each child is difficult to juggle. However, I find baking and cooking with my special helpers the perfect way to squeeze a little “special time” in with each of them.
The other day I was introduced to RobinHood.ca a brand new website that gives you all the tools you need to start, and continue, baking with your kids.
I really loved the idea of setting a baking date; once it is marked in the calendar it is likelier to happen. It also gives the children a chance to visually see the upcoming “date” they have in the kitchen with mom and/or dad. Not to mention who doesn’t look forward to sitting down with a sweet treat after a long day?
When using RobinHood.ca I was extremely impressed with the detail they put into their Baking with Kids section. When choosing a recipe from their Baking with Kids section they give you tips to add fun to your baking date. Check them out.
RobinHood.ca shares great tips for the kids, but maybe a few of you might learn something along the way too
Joining the RobinHood.ca community gives you the opportunity to share pictures of your creations and ask questions. Not to mention, they email you yummy reminders to get baking with suggestions that make it hard not to get your mouth watering.
This week my baking date started as a one-on-one and ended as a two-on–one – when giggles and sugar are involved, turning away help is hard to do. We welcomed all helping hands.
Banana bread is by far my favorite recipe to bake in the kitchen. My bananas are always stacking up in the freezer for the next loaf. I will be tossing aside my longtime recipe though for this new one from Robin Hood, as it’s extremely moist, and the coconut adds that special crunch.
- TOPPING:
- ½ cup (125 mL) flaked coconut
- ¼ cup (50 mL) packed brown sugar
- 1 tbsp (15 mL) butter
- 1 tbsp (15 mL) Robin Hood® All Purpose Flour
- BATTER:
- ⅓ cup (75 mL) Crisco® Canola Oil
- ¾ cup (175 mL) sugar
- 1 tsp (5 mL) pure vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup (250 mL) mashed ripe bananas (2 medium bananas)
- 1 ¾ cups (425 mL) Robin Hood All Purpose Flour
- 1 ½ tsp (7 mL) baking soda
- ¼ tsp (1 mL) baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 cup (250 mL) white chocolate chips, divided
- Preheat oven to 325ºF (160ºC). Grease an 8” x 4” (1.5 L) loaf pan.
- Topping: In a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Set aside.
- Batter: In a large bowl, mix oil, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Add reserved banana and stir until incorporated. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt and stir until flour is incorporated. Add ¾ cup (175 mL) white chocolate chips. Pour into prepared pan. Top with remaining ⅓ cup (75 mL) white chocolate chips and cover with topping.
- Bake at 325°F (160°C) in centre of preheated oven for about 65-75 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.
- Cool in pan on rack. Don’t worry if bread seems a little darker than you would expect. It is still very moist and delicious!
When I was a kid my favorite part about baking with mom was licking the whisk. Hey, I still take a lick before I hand them over to the kids.
Life gets busy that taking a little time to enjoy the simple things in life is so important for the kids, plus mommy and daddy too.

Great recipe! My son’s were not much into baking in the kitchen when young, now they are late teens. I happen to now have one that loves to bake and does a pretty good job.
The photo of the finished product actually made me hungry, honestly. I love baking with the kids just to see how creative they are. I only have one who will help clean up after, the others take off. I too love licking the spatula..lol. I will definitely have to try your recipe, thanks for posting it.

You have such great little helpers in the kitchen. My son has left the nest, but I love it when he calls me for one of our family recipes or sends me a text message to show off a meal he has prepared.
