Every family spends their family nights a little differently. Our definition of family night is:
“A night when our family fully engages and enjoys mindful time with each other.”
Our family nights change and are redefined by the season, the weather, and at times, our energy levels predict the level of entertainment we will enjoy. No matter the season, after a busy week of juggling life, sometimes our family nights are simple: PJ’s and snuggles on the couch well streaming a family movie. In the summer, we enjoy late nights kicking a soccer ball around the yard, a bike ride around the block, cooking dinner or weekend breakfast at the fire pit or racing Plasma cars in the driveway. In the fall, we harvest our garden together, enjoy beautiful hikes and rake maple leaf piles to jump into.
In true Canadian style when the weather dips below 0 and our back yard ice rink is firm and ready to skate on, you can guarantee we are redefining our family night by playing a little shinny on our backyard ice rink.
You would think with a backyard rink I must be great on skates? No way, but my husband loves skating and hockey as do our four children. I do my best to keep upright and continue to create memories with them.
Once our game of backyard shinny is over, we enjoy warming up with an outdoor fire, warm hot chocolate and a special treat. This is my favorite part of our redefined-for-the-winter family night. Laughing about the goal that went in or giving high fives to a job well done or just catching up after a long day of responsibilities.
Since we redefine family night for the winter with a game of backyard shinny and an outdoor fire in the winter, it is only natural to treat my family to a sweet treat that has been redefined itself. Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations Bars are candy bars filled with either jelly popping candies that explode in your mouth, banana caramel crisp or cookie nut crunch.
When the kids saw these candy bars, pure joy lit up their eyes. The packaging itself gives you a carnival feeling. Cadbury has done a wonderful thing by combining candy store favourites melted in-between creamy Dairy Milk chocolate.
We were all sitting around our outdoor fire warming up after a bitter cold skate, picking which candy bar each kid was going to try first, when we got creative in how the kids were going to break these new candy bars.
Mr. L wacked it on the brick of the fire pit.
Miss C used her skate to snap off a piece to share.
Daddy broke into it with his hand.
So creamy and full of spunk all in one bite. I would have to say my favorite was the bar that contained the Jelly Popping Candy. It brought me back to my childhood. The Banana Caramel Crisp was unique, with pieces of banana and a chewy caramel flavour combination. This was also a top pick for me. Hubby enjoyed the crunch in the Cookie Nut Crunch bar but had a hard time narrowing it down to just one as well.
The kids couldn’t pick, they enjoyed each one and continued to request “Just one more piece, pretty please mommy!” They all gave these candy bars a thumbs up.
We were all like kids in a candy store leaving only a few empty wrappers behind…
…plus, many redefined memories of a fun night together as a family.
Find out how this family also redefined their family time together:
Mix It Up: Teach your kids about their culture and family traditions by focusing on food and fun.
No matter which flavour you like best, breaking into a Marvellous Creations candy bar is the perfect way to break up your family night!
How will you break your Marvellous Creations bar? How do you redefine family night?

wow those are some big chocolate bar I must try. Looks like lots of fun on the rink at your house 🙂
Skating on the pond down the road was so much fun when we were kids
When we were young all the kids skated at a near by pond for hours every evening
we had a pond near our home when we were kids we skated the day and nights away so much fun , love to skate , and my kids do as well , they skated a lot as kids 🙂
Good for you for skating with the kids even though you might not be as “good” as Darryl. You are teaching the kids it’s important to try new things even if you don’t excel right away. So many moms just sit on the sidelines and miss out playing with their kids!!
Also my favourite bar is the banana one! I bought one after receiving a free sample at Loblaws. It was my after dinner treat for a few days although if was hard to refrain from eating if all in one sitting!
Did you get the family size? What a great combination, so yummy!
Thanks Brandy! Yes Winter not being my favorite I was on the side lines for many years. So glad I have found a way to be front and center no matter the season!
We grew up witha backyard rink as most families in Canada do! Lots of fond memories of my childhood.
I’ve been seeing these new bars on TV but haven’t tried them yet! I really want to get my hands on the Cotton Candy
Darlene that is great to hear! It is a Canadian tradition that I hope keeps strong with time!
I would break them up and top on my cupcakes
You are lucky to have such a large back yard rink. My brother’s is very tiny in comparison 🙂
Thank you Marilyn!
Awe,what a fun day !
Thanks Kathy it was!
It looks like everyone was having a great time! You are better than me on skates, that’s for sure!
You have one awesome backyard!! love the size of your rink and I love the firepit, it would be awesome to sit around after skating and drinking hot chocolate, that alone would be a perfect outing!!
Thank you Lynda we are very proud of the work we have put into it!
