Collecting Dust

recycling old electronics Ontario Drop offIt was 15 years ago when hubby and I bought our first computer. We had no need for it besides opening up our excel sheet to complete the budget our financial adviser set into place. I laugh now because it was huge and we spent well over $2000 for it. Over the years we used it for more than an excel sheet. I started to work from home once my first maternity leave was over. We used that huge old HP Compaq to its fullest extent for over 8 years.

Quickly times changed and laptops were all the rage, we bought a new laptop and stored away our old electronic computer in the storage room collecting dust.

The plan was to save it for the kids (at the time we only had one baby.) Just last year we decided that our four kids were finally old enough to have a computer. Of course it has been 7 years since our old computer was stored and we were not dragging out the old huge out-of-date HP Compaq for the kids. Touch screen is the latest technology rage and that was mandatory in our latest purchase.

The point of the story is…. although we thought so many years ago, keeping our original huge old electronic computer for the kids was a smart idea, it was just plain silly. Technology changes daily and storing it for all those years was cluttering space.

  • Interesting! I’m making recycling electronics a regular habit and I can’t believe how much would have gotten throw out!

  • I have drawers full of cell phones, I need to recycle those right. I laughed when you said your computer cost $2000. My old (and not so good) computer cost that too. Now that buys you an awesome one.

  • I have recycled my old computer (good to note; local Best Buys will take them) and encourage others to do the same 🙂 I would HIGHLY recommend opening the computer up and destroying the internal hard drive with a drill press – you never know where your computer will end up and your personal information may be on it!
