The Dirty Truth About What Your Breathing: Indoor Air Matters It’s Asthma Peak Season

The dirty truth is your indoor air contains an extensive list of undetectable pollutants. With September being Asthma Peak it’s the perfect time to shed some light on why 20% + of children’ hospital admissions for asthma occur in September.

Although we don’t suffer from Asthma, a few of us suffer from September Allergies. As soon as I hear a lawn mower in our neighborhood, I am closing all my windows. But should they be open in the first place?

Little did I know…Indoor air can up to 5x more polluted than outdoor air. Even when it looks and smells clean?

How Clean Is Your Indoor Air?

Here is just a sample of what we cannot see but chances are we both inhaling:

  • They say, a cubic meter of indoor air may contain 15,000 flu viruses. (Please note: I am hyperventilating inside right now.)
  • A carpet can hold 8 times its weight in dirt, pesticides and other toxins. Therefore they become undetectable airborne pollutants when dry, polluting your indoor air. (And that is exactly why I don’t have carpets.)
  • Dust particles on upholstered furniture can contain decomposing insect parts, pet dander, and flakes of skin. All of which are released into your indoor air anytime anyone sits down. (Note to self: Never to buy used furniture with fabric.)
  • There is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog or cat. Short-haired or hairless animals contribute dander and allergens to indoor air pollution just as effectively as long-haired animals do. (As much as I miss our pets deeply, I don’t miss the daily vacuuming of pet hairs.)
  • Central air systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew, viruses and bacteria. Then distribute throughout your home or office. (Not sure I could live without mine?)
  • People exposed to heavy indoor smoke are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (Have you read my recent post on smoking?)
  • Odors from felt markers, inks, glues, correction fluid, toner from copiers and other office chemicals can emit vapors at room temperature. Consequently, over time can cause symptoms similar to inhaling formaldehyde. (I assume this would reduce work performance?)

  • I would love to win the Aeramax DX55 Air Purifier because my family and i all suffer from allergies almost daily, we have 1 dog, 3 cats and 2 bunnies who are currently shedding daily! the air quality isn’t the greatest in our home so this would really be great to have in our home.

  • I need an Aeramax DX55 Air Purifier because the air quality in our townhome that we rent is not the greatest and the circulation of air sucks. Having this could help my kids and I with our allergies.

  • This would be perfect for my condo. I live in an older condo, thus, a lot of the air from other units are being ventilated into our unit. I wake up and go to sleep with a runny nose from allergies. My hubby have skin problems and this will help control the allergies.

  • i am due with our second kid in feb, and I want to make sure that all the bad stuff around the house is gone. I don’t want my kids to suffer from asthma or allergies

  • I live in a basement apartment with 2 cats and there is very little air circulation (even less in winter when the small windows won’t open due to snow and icing) so air is definitely recycled and probably not the healthiest to breathe in due to mold spores, dust mites, and most airborne microbes coming from my cats that invade my apartment on a daily basis (yuck!). Would love this unit before I do develop allergies, etc. from breathing in this unhealthy air that my plants can’t clean fast enough.

  • Since having radiation for breast cancer I find I am sneezing and get stuffy all the time.It is like I have developed alergies that I never had before?????Weard

  • I have year round allergies, I do have an older air purifier but it is so loud and the motor has a high pitched whine that I no longer run it if I am in the room which kind of defeats the purpose
