Rio 2016 Summer Olympics are taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil starting on August 5th, 2016. Athletes worldwide are gearing up for their competition with their sights set on a podium win.

The day before the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics the Brazilian government is hosting a high-level movement that targets a worldwide problem, malnutrition. This is where we need your help.

RESULTS Canada is calling on Canadians across the country to use your collective voice to motivate world leaders to pledge their political and financial support for ending global malnutrition. To generate momentum for this fight, world leaders will kick-start a series of opportunities for countries like Canada to show their leadership. This will take place on August 4th—the eve of the 2016 Olympics.

The numbers are horrifying, something us Canadians can easily ignore. How does ignoring global malnutrition help this sweet child?

Global Malnutrition: The Problem Is Real

  • Undernutrition keeps people from reaching their full potential.
  • Undernourished children underperform in school, limiting their future job opportunities.
  • Undernourished adults are less able to work, contribute to local economies, and provide care for their families.
  • Undernourished mothers are more likely to have underweight children, who will, in turn, have a higher risk of physical and cognitive impairment.

Without the assistance of not-for-profit corporations like RESULTS Canada, the cycle of poverty and economic stagnation will never end. And sweet children like these will not have a fighting chance at the life they deserve.

What was the first moment you became interested in the issue of malnutrition globally?

I first became aware of malnutrition at a rather young age….“There are children in Guatemala who do not have enough to eat. Your little friends are hungry, and you can help”. This was the message conveyed to me and my fellow Gr. 3 students by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the early 1960’s. The idea of going hungry or not getting enough to eat; I had a hard time understanding that as a child raised on a farm. We didn’t have a lot, but we never went hungry. This was when I first realized that there was so much more beyond my little 8-year-old world and becoming aware of children around the world and that I could actually, as a child, help someone else!

What role do you see for yourself and other Canadians in addressing the issue of global malnutrition?

This early awakening to ‘global issues’ also gave me the notion that I live in a country that can contribute to the rest of the world. In the early 1980’s I read a book co-written by Jacques Hebert and Maurice Strong entitled ‘The Great Building Bee – Canada a Hope for the Third World.’ Their inspired ideas of the contribution that Canada could make in the world has left an indelible mark on my soul. They spoke of the possibility of our great leadership as a country…inspired leadership not only through the political process but by individuals seeing their potential as leaders and marching on from there. It was as though I had been given my marching orders and have since been an advocate for Canada being a powerful, compassionate voice in the world.

What advice would you give to Canadians who are looking to make a positive difference in the world?

Advice to Canadians…simple steps, simple actions make a huge difference…we just don’t necessarily see the long term effects of our simple actions. Being kind no matter who, what or where…kindness in the day to day gives rise to contribution felt by the many. Kindness can lead to acts of courage and actions that we may not have thought we were capable of. Kindness expressed with our families, neighbors and people we may not even know. Making a difference in the world begins with this simple action…and all manner of avenues of its expression; these acts of kindness will without a doubt, present themselves…opportunities to contribute in your community, your province, your country and your planet. Opportunities to express kindness will find you!

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Inez a few months back at the National RESULTS Canada conference in Ottawa. She was an absolute pleasure in person. I support this initiative wholeheartedly and love that they doing more than just raising awareness, they are putting dollars where they matter. Great blog post. Thanks for sharing.

  • World poverty is a terrable thing but how can we be helping others when we have people in our own country going hungry and living on the streets. When you help other and not your own it is just for reconition of others. It is sad and phoney. I have 2 sister who are there for everyone else but never even called me when I had cancer or while my brother had spinal surgery and now has such a bad infection they fly special meds in from ottowa and Dr. have to administer it daily. So yes my two sisters are true Canadians help other and F—-your own.

  • I have been following Inez on Twitter since I first heard of this campaign. Poverty and malnutrition are complex problems requiring many hands and minds working together with policy makers to try to make chance happen. I support this initiative and hope that Results Canada generates resources they need to drive awareness and create change.
