What inspired you start your business?

A few years ago, I had a major wakeup call when I went into acute kidney failure. Up until this time, I had spent a lot of time abusing my body mentally and physically. In my late teens, I started feeling an intense pressure to be thin and developed a real self-hate for my body. I tried every fad diet on the market, all of which left me feeling hungry, miserable and defeated. I was a horrible person to myself and everyone around me.

Then one day, I woke up and said I’m not living like this anymore.

So I started out on a journey to clean up my mind, body and soul. Five years later, I’m 30 lbs lighter, I’m more inspired, more creative, less irritable, more energetic and a better person to myself and everyone around me.

I knew I had to take what I had learned on this journey and use it to help others. That’s why we started That Clean Life.

How did you come up with the concept of your business?

From my own journey, I know that eating healthy can be super overwhelming. The concept of That Clean Life came from our desire to simplify the process. We wanted to take the guesswork out of healthy eating and make it simple and fun.

What have been some of your major successes in business?

We’ve helped hundreds of people change their eating habits and look and feel their best. But one of our biggest successes has been to see parents pass down their new healthy eating habits to their kids! It is so awesome to see our mission really grow.

What have been some of your major challenges in business?

Every day is a challenge! I’d say my biggest challenge has been to be patient. I am the most impatient person in the world and expect things to happen overnight. We are tackling a huge problem – changing the way people eat, which is going to take time and perseverance.

Another challenge has been to prioritize our work. We are a small but mighty team of three, so we have limited time and resources but a million ideas on what to tackle next. Choosing next steps can be hard and we’ve learned we need to be really smart and strategic about it.

If there was one piece of advice you could give about running a successful business, what would it be?

Have patience and believe in your mission whole-heartedly. But most importantly, don’t ever give up.

Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource that helps make your day easier?

My favourite business tool is Trello – an app that allows you to organize anything with anyone. Our team uses Trello to keep our thoughts and to-do lists organized. It also allows us to see what each other is working on, prioritize tasks, plan for the future and even communicate with each other. I also love how it allows us to visualize everything we’ve accomplished. There’s something really satisfying about moving cards to the “done” column.

What did you do in your past work life?

I was working full-time as a pediatric Registered Nurse in Toronto.

How do you unwind after a long day?

With a good workout! After spending a long day helping other people, it is the best thing I can do to help myself. It is awesome for managing stress and I always feel like a million bucks after getting a good sweat on! A good workout can turn a bad day around in a snap.

Do you have a motivational quote, you would love to share?

I love this quote by Steve Jobs:

“When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you’re life is just to live your life inside the world.  Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life.

Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.”  Steve Jobs (1955 – 2011)
