Tips To Remember Your Own Oxygen Mask First + #ONatural Giveaway

In less than a week Mother’s Day will be here for us to enjoy. I have the perfect gifts for the mothers in our lives, ready to be wrapped. We don’t typically do anything fancy and that is just the way I like it. Have a glimpse at my Mother’s day last year when we planted 100 cedar trees in our backyard and I was grounded by the little things in life.

Nothing out of the ordinary is planned for this Mother’s Day, some yard work in my gardens and maybe if mommy gets her wish, we will plant a couple fruit trees in our growing orchard (hint hint.) I am confident that my incredible husband will make a mouth-watering breakfast which will include this Fluffy Gluten-Free Banana Pancake Recipe that we all love so much. And I cannot wait to see all the handmade crafts our children put so much heart and soul into making for me leading up to the big day.

What have I learnt as a mom?

Over my last nine years as a mother, I have learnt many lessons and our children have been my biggest teachers. However, I have to say my recent discovery as a mother has been a lesson that has opened my eyes up wide and one that I am so thankful I can finally truly see the value in.

Have you ever been on a plane? You know when the flight attendant is demonstrating how to put on your oxygen mask?

She typically says something along the lines of remember to put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting others.”  For the longest time I thought that saying was crazy. I am not a “ME” mother and my children will always come first. Yes, my children are my first priority and that is why me taking the time to take care of myself “first” makes perfect sense in putting my children first.

Mom’s Remember Your Own Oxygen Mask First Everything I do is for my family and that includes adding some “mommy time” to my day.

My Aha Moment

My story is out of the ordinary, it took place at Blissdom Canada Fall 2014. The Tim Hortons lounge was hosting a Meditation hour on the Sunday morning. I heard them all weekend talk about the Meditation hour they were hosting, telling all the attendees who came in and out of their lounge that weekend to join them. I was pumped to give it a try from the moment they first mentioned it to me. I have dabbled in Meditation and I really enjoyed the effects it had on me and I couldn’t wait to do it with a room full of women. The thing was no one but me showed up…it was strange because between the signs and conversation all weekend I would have assumed it would have been a full house. I was cool with it because now I had the Meditation teacher all to myself! I won’t get into my whole experience because that is a whole other post and much more spiritual than I need to write here.

I will say once the session was done Che the meditation coach said something to me that still today I believe has been my opening to finally putting myself first. She said “You need to help yourself first in order to be the best you can be for your family. Let your inner fire out and you can help everyone else that much better.” At that moment I had no clue what she meant. Early that morning I left the conference a little premature because I truly felt that was all I needed to go home with. I had a strong feeling overtake me and it still moves me today. It was a sign and that sign is now my reality. After the conference I started seeing a nutritionist for myself and my family and our lives have changed forever.

Tips To Remember Your Own Oxygen Mask First

All because I started to listen to my body and started to put on my own oxygen mask on first before assisting others. I lost 25 lbs and feel better than I did in my twenties. It’s not about the weight at all, that is icing on the cake.

It is about taking the time to breathe, relax, read a magazine, sit and enjoy a mindful moment.

Taking my vitamins, eating a well-balanced meal three times a day without eating the foods that cause my body inflammation.

It is about drinking lots of water and enjoying my tea without reheating it three times first.

It is all about carving out the time to enjoy moments with my husband even if it is sushi take out once the kids are in bed.

It is about knowing my limits and knowing when to walk away and refocus.

That to me it what it means to “remember to put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting others.”
